15th Century Barn in Baconsthorpe, Norfolk

DSC_0003

On a visit to Baconsthorpe Castle, Norfolk, last Christmas 2013, we came across this….well you could hardly miss it…. a 15th century barn standing near to the castle.  The barn was once part of the castle buildings, but it is now in private hands.  The present building is shorter and lower than in its 15th century form. The thatched roof was replaced in the 19th century with tiles. Recently the barn has been restored by re-roofing and it looks like the tiles had been re-used.

The colour of the tiles is that wonderful brick red, and with the flint stone walls, it makes the building almost church like…….that could be the reason I like barns so much.
