While passing through Shepton Mallet in Somerset, on the way back from Glastonbury in 2014, I saw a building out of the corner of my eye. We just had to back track, to see what the huge building was, husband moaned a bit, but he did turn round 🙂 I had no idea what the building was, except I like it, I also liked the name The Anglo Trading Estate, but the name gave me no hint.
Now if the building had been called by its original name Shepton Mallet Pale Ale Brewery, I would have know straight way what it had been 🙂 Established in 1864 and has been claimed, as the first lager brewery in the the UK, although the claim is disputed. In 1872 the Pale Ale Brewery was renamed the Anglo-Bavarian Brewery, the brewery close in 1920. In 1947 the grade 2 listed building became The Anglo Trading Estate, providing warehousing and distribution to a range of local businesses. Its wonderful that this building was given a new lease of life instead of being levelled to the ground and is still in good use.
