The Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye, Scotland

One of the most amazing sights you will see, when you travel around the Isle of Skye in Scotland, is the ‘Old Man of Storr’  We passed by in 2013, and you can see the rock looming up from quite a distance.  The following photos are of the drive to the site.

The ‘Old Man’ is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around. As part of the Trotternish ridge the Storr was created by a massive ancient landside, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.

The Old Man of Storr rises to 535 metres and is visibile from the main road between Portree and Staffin on the west coast of Skye. Dominating the scene and visible fom many more parts of the islands the Storr is the hill immediately west of the Old Man and rising to 719 metres.  This is now a very poplar walk and gets very busy, although its not classed as an easy walk.

  1. Great shots, Lynne! Such beautiful country. I love rock formations like this. Our western deserts are littered with them. The Old Man looks like he may be moving away from his fellows, I hope he’s not heading for the road! 🙂 A really incredible place.

    1. Thank you Pat, I would love to see your western deserts. When I was a little girl, I thought all of America looked like that….too many cowboy and Indian films in black and white 🙂

      1. They filmed many, many of those westerns in the desert! There was a lot of that kind of country not far from Hollywood. Death Valley is one of my favorite places and they filmed parts of the first Star Wars movie there. There is a little more to this country than desert, as you have seen! 🙂

  2. Awesome. I use this word in its original sense as signifying something that occasions awe, not as a bland word indicating something nice. In fact, ‘awful’ first meant exactly that — awe-ful. How meanings change …

    1. Ha ha, its true you can learn something new everyday, in my case, loads 🙂 I never knew that about the word, but I do now, so I am glad you found them awesome 🙂
