After our visit to the Basilica on the Isola San Giulio on Lake Orta, Italy, September 2018, we walk around this enchanting tiny island. The island is 275 metres long, and is 140 metres wide, there is a circular interior path which leads around the vast Benedictine monastery. In one direction, the signs say “the way of silence” and in the other “the way of meditation”. There was a monumental old seminary (1840s), but since 1976, it was transformed into the benedictine monastery, which is in the centre of the island, as you can see on the photo that I took the next day from the nearby hillside on the mainland. The walk only takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but as there are no cars, well there’s not enough room them, it was lovely and peaceful. Next post…… back to the mainland and a another pocket size church.
